To mark the 80th anniversary of the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, the Memorial of Silence exhibition will present a documentary look at the background of the far-reaching plans of the acting Reich Protector. Prague was to become the centre for the planning of a new arrangement of the European Southeast. The basis for changes in the occupied territories would be the racial quality of the inhabitants and their usefulness to the Third Reich after the victorious war. The far-reaching plans for the reorganisation of the Central Reich – after the annexation of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia and the General Government – contained visions for which the Holocaust was “only” a prologue in the future layout of the Eurasian continent.
This exhibition about the creation of multidisciplinary Nazi “visionary” teams documents Reinhard Heydrich’s little-known background while also presenting a polemical discussion on the misuse of science, scholarship, and the academic environment.
The centres for racial quality assessment were located in Prague – mostly in buildings confiscated from Charles University. The institutes for the assessment of the quality of the population were managed by pseudo-scientific specialists whose education was at the level of professors. Prague was to become the Third Reich’s city of science for the future… Racial science.
