Karel Cudlín
Babi Yar
One of the worst massacres of the Second World War took place at Babi Yar in late September 1941, when nearly 40,000 Jews were shot in this narrow ravine on the outskirts of Kyiv over the course of two days. But the massacres continued afterwards as well, and the final number of killed in this place is estimated at somewhere between 150,000 and 200,000 people.
Leading Czech documentary photographer Karel Cudlín (1960) has long focused on the area of Central and Eastern Europe and on the subjects of faith and religion. This interest has led him to photograph many stigmatized places, and not just in this part of the world. Babi Yar is one such place. Cudlín photographed the memorial to these horrible events nearly without people, alone in the melancholic autumn atmosphere.
